Histoopathologic Studies on the Effects Excessibe Methionine on Growing Rats

Abstract
Young albino rats, 100¡150gm. of body weight, were applied in the experiments. The experimental animals were devided into two groups ; one group was raised with 2% DL-methionine added diet for one. month, and the other for 2 months with the same diet. The effects of excessive methionine on growing rats were compared histologically with normal diet rats.
The results are as follows :
1. Body weight : The growing rate of experimental group rats was inferior to that of control group rats. The difference in body weight of the two groups was more noticeable in the first three weeks.
2. Submaxillary giands : The average weights of submaxillary glands of one and two month experimental group rats were less than that of each control group rats. Histologically, shrinking and distortion of acinar cells were remarkable, and active regenerative change was also observed in both experimental groups.
3. Liver : The average liver weight of experimental group rats was heavier than that of control group rats at the end of one month, and more so after two months. In histological examination a slight fatty change was ovserved on peripheral zone of the hepatic lobules in 5 cases(45.4%) of one month experimental group, and 4 cases (36.3%) of two month experimental group. Regenerative change was remarkable on the peripheral zone in 7 cases (63.6%) from either of the experimental group. Iron reaction was negative in one month experimental group, but it appeared slightly on Kupffer cells in 5 cases (45.4%) of two month experimental group.
4. Panereas : Atrophic or destructive lesions on the acinar cells of panvteas were observed in the 8 cases (72.7%) of one month experimental group and 5 cases (45.4%) of two month experimental group. Regenerative change appeared on the acinar cells in 9 cases (81.8%) of one month experimental group and 10 cases (90.9%) of two month experimental group¡¤
5. Gastrointestinal tract: Slight atrophic change on gastric mucosae was seen in 8 cases (72.7%) of each of the experimental groups. Atophic change on the mucous membrane of the small intestine was also observed in 7 cases (63.6%) of each groups.
6. Spleen : Atrophy of the lymphfollicles was noticeable in 7 cases (63.6%) of ene month experimental group and all cases (100%) of two month experimental group. Iron reaction was positive in all cases of both experimental and control groups bet the intensity was stronger in experimental group.
7.Other organs
Thymus: There was slight atrophy of the lob ules in all cases of both experimental groups.
Throid glands: In experimental group, the follicles of thyroid glands were smaller and contained less collidal material.
Adrenal glands: Cytoplasmic vacuolization on the medullary cells was less remarkable in experimental groups_than in controls.
Kidney: In the experimental group, the lumens of the renal tubules were more dilated and glomeruli were also slightly larger than in each control group.
